Before we had dryers, everyone had to hang clothes on a line and hope that it didn’t rain. So, there is no question of the importance of this appliance. When you are faced with a broken dryer, like with any appliance, you must decide whether to pay for dryer repair or replace it.
Is a dryer repair what I need?
Dryers are a little different than most other appliances because replacement just does not carry as many plus sides as with others. In the last 20 years there has not been many advances in improving energy efficiency, so there is little to no savings there. Also, it seems that they just don’t make them like they used to. Your grandparents and parents dryers were able to last over 30 years, so if you are still using a much older model, it can be recommended to spend the money to repair. These days, dryers are only lasting between 11 and 16 years so you may get just as much use out of repairing as you will replacing.
A big difference between other appliances and dryers are also their simplicity. There are not as many pieces to a dryer so it can be relatively easy to diagnose and fix. Also, most of the parts that go wrong are pretty cheap and easy to replace quickly. In fact, most replacement parts can be fixed by most DIY-ers in a few hours.
So, what it really comes down to is the price of repair versus the price of replacement and type of machine. Remember, if you choose to replace, the more extra do-dads and fancy functions you get the more expensive and complicated future repairs will be.
